National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

What is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day?

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day was initiated by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in 2010 to address the public safety issue created by unused prescription medications, which are highly susceptible to misuse, abuse, and theft. The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to safely and securely dispose of unneeded and unwanted medications to help prevent drug misuse and overdose deaths in our communities. When is the next Take Back Day?

The 26th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, from 10am – 2pm. ODP encourages local organizations across the state to coordinate or promote Take Back Day events in their communities to help Idahoans properly dispose of unused or expired medications.

Host a Take Back Day Event

Hosting a Take Back Day collection site event provides an opportunity for residents to properly dispose of their old and unused medications, while also raising awareness about the dangers of opioid misuse and the importance of removing unused prescriptions from the home – making your community members safer, healthier, and more informed. Organizations interested in planning an event should start by downloading, reviewing, and utilizing ODP’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Collection Site Event Planning Toolkit and Promotional Guide below.

The Toolkit provides all of the information and materials you need to successfully organize and promote a collection site event, including:

  • 8 Step Take Back Day Collection Site Event Planning Guide
  • DEA Protocols and Registration Form
  • Promotional Templates – posters, flyers, a press release, news article, talking points, and social media guide
